Sen. McCain's son Jack graduates from Naval Academy

This morning, President Obama delivered the commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In the audience, among the newly minted Navy and Marine officers, was a young man named Jack McCain the son of Obama's former adversary, Sen. John McCain.

John Sidney McCain IV, or "Jack," is the fourth McCain to graduate from the academy, reports CNN. The young McCain's commission as a Navy ensign comes 103 years after his great-grandfather's. In an extensive interview with GoMids.com last year, Jack McCain admitted that he's gotten into some trouble at school, including 60 "demerits" for wearing flip-flops outside. But his infractions come nowhere near his father's record: “With his legacy, either academics or conduct, he doesn’t really have the room to criticize," Jack joked.

According to Jack, when Sen. McCain dropped him off on Induction Day, the first day of the six-week summer training session for Annapolis plebes, McCain senior had some sage advice: "'Don’t lie, cheat or steal – anything else is fair game.'"

McCain's youngest son, Jimmy, is currently overseas serving as a corporal in the Marines, while Meghan, the oldest McCain offspring, is making a name for herself in the media. Meghan currently blogs for The Daily Beast and makes regular TV appearances on "The View," "The Rachel Maddow Show," "Larry King" and other talk shows.

In his speech, Obama voiced his support for the military and made a promise to the graduates:

"I will only send you into harm's way when it is absolutely necessary, and with the strategy, the well-defined goals, the equipment and the support that you need to get the job done."

This was Obama's third and final commencement address; earlier this month, the president spoke at Arizona State University. Last Sunday at Notre Dame, Obama's address was preceded by protests by students and prominent Catholic leaders because of the president's support for abortion rights.
